A crime-comedy drama starring actors from Harry Potter, Skins, Bridgerton and Emily in Paris has soared up the Netflix chart since dropping this week.
In 2000, Guy Ritchie’s film Snatch hit screens. Set in London’s criminal underworld, it followed a search for a stolen diamond intertwined with a small-time boxing promoter coming up against a ruthless gangster.
It starred Jason Statham, Stephen Graham, Dennis Farina, Brad Pitt and Benicio del Toro and has since developed a cult following.
Then, 17 years later, a TV adaptation was released. This time around Snatch followed a group of young scammers who get wrapped up in the world of organised crime after ending up with a truck loaded with stolen gold bullion.
That version starred Luke Pasqualino, Rupert Grint, Lucien Laviscount, Phoebe Dynevor and Dougray Scott.

Gossip Girls’ Ed Westwick also appeared in the first season.

Despite the star-studded cast the series debuted to mixed reviews.
‘It’s one thing to make a world of robbers, crooks, and murderers look like a Calvin Klein ad, but the fact that Snatch isn’t even particularly interested in the criminal mind is what ultimately sinks the whole enterprise,’ Collider wrote in its review.
‘Criminality can be fun. But too much criminal stupidity will make Snatch a dull show,’ The Toronto Star lamented.
But there were others who loved it, with viewers calling it ‘fun and action packed’ and a ‘must-watch’.
This week the series – which aired for two seasons – was released on Netflix, where users have rushed to watch it. Snatch is now the sixth most-watched show in the UK on the streaming service.
Speaking to Metro when the show premiered Rupert, who played con-man Charlie Cavendish-Scott, spoke about the pressure adapting the beloved film.
‘But yeah, it’s always difficult when you’re making something that’s so loved. Especially in the UK, it’s one of those films that’s always quoted,’ he said.
‘This is a completely new reimagining; the punchy dialogue has come over from the original but that’s it. But a lot has changed in 17 years.’
Snatch is streaming on Netflix.
